Este es el tercer trabajo de Rodolphe Alexis en el
sello alemán Gruenrekorder [“Sempervirent”,
2012 y “Morne Diablotins”, 2014], artista sonoro y
diseñador francés que vive y trabaja en París. Su trabajo se basa en
grabaciones de campo, composición electroacústica, piezas de radio y sitios
específicos para instalaciones o presentaciones.
En 2009, Alexis estuvo a unas
pocas horas en barco de la isla más al sur de japón, Iriomote-Jima que forma
parte de la prefectura de Okinawa y que otrora perteneció al archipealago de Yaeyama
y a las Islas Ryukyus.
En aquel tiempo Alexis no pudo llegar
allí por falta de medios, por lo que se prometió volver.
En 2014 regresa premunido con un equipo
de micrófonos de cuatro canales.
En esta isla habitan muchas especies,
entre ellas insectos, ranas y aves, sino también los murciélagos voladores y el
famoso gato leopardo llamado Yamaneko, que sólo fue descubierto en 1965.
El 90% de la isla está cubierta por una
selva y manglares y en ese entorno en plena temporada de verano, Alexis apunta
su micrófono para captar una inmensa variedad de insectos, aves, ranas y
reptiles que emiten sus cantos como actividad sonora en esta vida salvaje.

This is the third work on the
German Gruenrekorder imprint [‘Sempervirent’, 2012 and “Morne Diablotins”,
2014] of Rodolphe Alexis, sound artist
and French designer who lives and works in Paris. His work is based on field
recordings, electroacoustic composition, radio parts and specific sites for
installations or presentations.
In 2009 Alexis was a few hours away
by boat from the southernmost island of Japan, Iriomote-Jima, part of Okinawa
Prefecture and former part of Yaeyama archipelago and Ryukyus Islands. At that
time he didn’t have no means to get there, therefore promises to come back.
In 2014 he went there with a four-channel microphone
setup.
In this island live many
species, including insects, frogs and birds, but flying bats and the famous
leopard cat named Yamaneko, which was only discovered in 1965.
90% of the island is covered by
jungle and mangroves and in this environment in summer season, Alexis pointed
his microphone to pick up a huge variety of insects, birds, frogs and reptiles
that emit their songs and sound activity in this wild life.
