Burning Star Core, “Challenger”, Plastic Records, 2008

Burning Star Core, ‘Challenger’, Plastic Records, 2008

Through The Bars Of A Rhyme” .

C. Spencer Yeh aka Burning Star Core has been active since 1993 and is a prolific musician working in his solo projects and releasing on Hospital Productions, Blossoming Noise, Drone Disco, No Fun Productions, No-Fi, and doing collaborations with a wide range of artists in the likes of Carlos Giffoni, Comets On Fire, Hototogisu, Yellow Swans, Aaron Dilloway, and Chris Corsano to name a few. . He’s a well known artist in the experimental and noise scene.
Perhaps ‘Challenger’ is more structured, no improvisations and more melodic than previous albums of the Cincinnati, Ohio artist.
‘Challenger’ starts with a synth loop note together with an organ and field recordings in the background. On ‘Beaty Hunter’ the guitar unfolds its furious wings alongwith a repetitive and sustained riff. A plastic object thrown several times makes a kind of percussion that creates silent spaces on  ‘Through The Bars Of A Rhyme’ . ‘Mezzo Forte’ has a processed vocoder and an acid guitar played by guest musician Trevor Tremaine while ‘No Memories, No Plans’ is a recording of hand claps which are processed and mixed in such a way that feels like percussion. ‘Hopelessly Devoted’ it’s a drone piece alongwith mouth harp played by Robert Beatty. The epic and beautiful melodies on ‘Mysteries Of The Organ’ with in crescendo electronic orchestration is simply gorgeous and stunning piece of work, only interrupted by a piano soundclash.
Finally ‘Un Couer En Hiver’ showcases a car engine recording and a subtle but disquieting synth lines. Really great!
