Philip Sulidae reside en Sidney y es un artista visual, pintor y músico quien trabaja en el campo de la música experimental electrónica, alongwith field recordings, software design sound and analogue keyboards.
Comenzó hace 10 años atrás escribiendo y produciendo música de distintos estilos pero desde hace pocos años se viene concentrando en lo que hace hoy en día. Hasta el momento ha editado “The Blacken Solver”, “Southwest”, “Unknow”, “Inward”, “Benandarah”, “Forest”, “Lodge” y “Hasnamuss”, muchos de estos publicados en su propio sello Dontcaresulidae.
Sulidae explora las finas texturas procesadas análoga y digitalmente, junto a registros de campo creando inquietantes paisajes sonoros.

Philip Sulidae is a Sidney based sound, visual artist, painter and musician who work in the experimental electronic field.
He started about 10 years ago writing and producing music of different genres but some years back he concentrated in the music that he’s doing now. He has released “The Blacken Solver”, “Southwest”, “Unknow”, “Inward”, “Benandarah”, “Forest”, “Lodge” and “Hasnamuss” most of them published on his own Dontcaresulidae imprint.
Sulidae explores fine textures processed with analog and digital means and field recordings creating disturbing and dense soundscapes.

¿Nos puedes comentar acerca de tu trabajo con los registros de campo y si los utilizas también en tus instalaciones sonoras?
“Utilizo muchas registros de campo que a menudo ocupo y grabo alrededor de mi casa y la ciudad. Ocasionalmente voy a un lugar específico si es que estoy buscando algo en particular. Por ejemplo, voy a tener un próximo disco en Mystery Sea por lo que necesité muchas grabaciones de agua, mar, etc. Afortunadamente vivo en Sydney que tiene un bello puerto y playas.
También realizo bastantes grabaciones de mi música pre-existente, no obstante como estoy escribiendo música voy a grabar a distintas locaciones y luego incorporarlo en capas en las que trabajo. Esto a veces llega al punto de borrar lo que había antes”.
¿Cómo comenzaste a hacer música?
“Comencé haciendo música (mal y sin ninguna idea real de lo que estaba hacienda) hace 10 o 11 años atrás. He escrito y producido música en prácticamente en todos los estilos imaginables, hasta que hace pocos años lentamente empecé a concentrarme en lo que estoy haciendo ahora. Siento que en aquel entonces gradualmente descargué gran parte de mi “maleta” musical con la que comencé y ahora estoy haciendo la música que realmente quiero hacer y que significa algo para mí”.
¿Tienes alguna relación con la escena experimental electrónica de Brisbane?
“Tengo cero relación con Brisbane o su escena. Pensaba que te referías a Room40 y a Lawrence English. En tal caso no tengo mayor contacto con ellos. ¡Australia es un país grande!”
¿Trabajas en otras formas de arte?
“Mi antecedentes y especialidad es en artes visuales, específicamente en pintura. Trabajo como un artista visual pero lo hago bajo un seudónimo, ya que prefiero mantener las dos cosas por separado. También me gusta mucho la idea de tener roles e identidades artísticas separadamente. A mí me focaliza en lo que estoy haciendo más claramente y guarda mis ideas algo frescas. Cuando estoy sintiendo un poco desalentado o cansado de la música voy y pinto”.

Could you please tell us about your work with field recordings and if you used them also in your sound installations?
“I use a lot of field recordings, which I usually record around my house and the city. Occasionally I'll go to a specific location if I'm after something in particular. For example, I have an upcoming release on Mystery Sea, so I needed loads of recordings of water, oceans etc. Luckily I live in Sydney which has a rather nice harbour and beaches!
I also do quite a lot of recording of my pre-existing music, or as I'm writing music I'll record parts in different locations and layer that into what I'm working in. Sometimes this can be to the point of wiping out what was already there.”
How did you start making music?
“I began making music (badly and without any real idea of what I was doing) about 10 or 11 years ago. I've written and produced music in just about every style imaginable, until slowly over the last few years settling into what I do now. It feels like over that time I've gradually dropped most of the musical "baggage" that I began with, and now I'm making the music that I really want to and that really means something to me.”
Do you have any relation with Brisbane’s experimental electronic scene?
“I have zero relation with Brisbane or it's scene - I think you might be referring to Room 40 and Lawrence English. In which case I don't really have much contact with them. Australia is a big country!”
Do you work with other art forms?
“My background and training is in visual arts, specifically painting. I do work as a visual artist but I do that under a pseudonym as I prefer to keep the two forms separate. I also quite like the idea of having disparate roles and artistic identities. I find that for me it makes me focus on what I'm doing more clearly and keeps my ideas a bit fresher. When I'm feeling a bit jaded or worn out from music I go and paint.”
