Desde 1989 y con más de 50 discos publicados, el guitarrista experimental portugués, nacido y afincado en Lisboa, Manuel Mota, lanza su nuevo disco «Isocèle» en su sello Headlights, en el que se han editado sus trabajos en solitario y en colaboración con otros artistas como Marcia Bennet, Margarida García, David Grubbs, Lee Ranaldo, Jason Kahn, Toshimaru Nakamura, Richard Pinhas y Tetuzi Akiyama, entre otros músicos. Desde la adolescencia Mota toca la guitarra y entre 1989 y 1997 estudió y experimentó con la guitarra preparada, principalmente acústica. En 1995, obtuvo una beca a Nueva York en donde conoció a Phil Niblock, quien lo influenció, centrando su trabajo en aquel entonces en la música drone y que hoy combina con la libre improvisación y las texturas electrónicas. Mota con su guitarra enhebra la cuerdas en remolinos de drones que hacen de su música un largo viaje, como se muestra en su reciente álbum “Isocèle 1”, grabado entre junio y octubre 2023. La apertura la hace «Isocèle 1» con un recorrido sinuoso e inquietante, con cuyos efectos las cuerdas trepidantes quedan flotando en el ambiente insinuando líneas melódicas. “Isocèle 2” continúa este largo periplo compuesto de capas que incluyen microscópicos sonidos de bordes agudos y saturados. Dejarse llevar por su onda expansiva es lo que sugiere esta música. Cierra este disco “Isocèle 3” donde la cuerdas procesadas se deslizan y en el camino van tomando formas abstractas, creando una atmósfera encantada. Mota realiza manipulaciones sonoras hábilmente intrincadas mientras envuelve al oyente en una espiral de ensueño y trance.
Since 1989 and with more than 50 albums published, Portuguese experimental guitarist, born and based in Lisbon, Manuel Mota, releases his new album «Isocèle» on his Headlights label, which has released his solo works and in collaboration with other artists such as Marcia Bennet, Margarida García, David Grubbs, Lee Ranaldo, Jason Kahn, Toshimaru Nakamura, Richard Pinhas and Tetuzi Akiyama, among other musicians. Mota has played the guitar since a teenager. Between 1989 and 1997 he studied and experimented with the prepared guitar, mainly acoustic. In 1995, he obtained a scholarship to New York where he met Phil Niblock, who influenced him, focusing his work at that time on drone music and which today he combines with free improvisation and electronic textures. Mota with his guitar threads the strings in swirls of drones that make his music a long journey, as shown in his recent album “Isocèle 1”, recorded between June and October 2023. The opening is «Isocèle 1» with a journey sinuous and disturbing, with the effects of the trembling strings floating in the environment insinuating melodic lines. “Isocèle 2” continues this long journey composed of layers that include microscopic sounds with sharp and saturated edges. Letting yourself be carried away by its expansive wave is what this music suggests. Closes this album “Isocèle 3”, where the processed strings slide and along the way they take on abstract shapes, creating a haunted atmosphere. Mota performs skillfully intricate sound manipulations while enveloping the listener in a spiral of reverie and trance.
