The Humble Bee & Offthesky
Cada lanzamiento de IIKKI, subsello del Francés Eilean Records, hay un diálogo – que en esta oportunidad – es entre los artistas musicales The Humble Bee & Offthesky y el fotógrafo finlandés Mikael Siirilä, de quien se publica un libro de fotografías con el título de “Here, In Absence”.
Craig Tattersall es conocido por su proyecto The Humble Bee, fundador del trío de The Boats. Ha colaborado con Bill Seaman, Daniel Crossley y Thomas Shrubsole, por nombrar algunos. Fue miembro de la banda Hood a mediados y finales de los ’90, así también de The Remote Viewer.
Jason Corder aka Offthesky es un artista sonoro experimental de Denver Colorado que trabaja en el subgénero del ambient.
Ha estado activo hace más de 20 años trabajando en los campos de la producción musical, videoarte, software de audio y, ocasionalmente en esculturas sonoras interactivas. Sus discos se han lanzado en Home Normal, en el subsello term de 12k, Facture, IIKKI, entre otros sellos.
En este álbum Craig Tattersall está a cargo de los espacios, notas y cintas. Por su parte, Jason Corder en los arreglos, mezcla, sintetizadores, texturas percusivas, glockenspiel y vibráfono. Como artista invitado Rin Howell en voz.
En relación a la propuesta artística de Mikael Siirilä comenta: “Mis pequeñas fotografías individuales tratan los temas de ausencia, presencia y marginación. Trabajo solamente con películas en blanco y negro y en el cuarto oscuro”.
“Here In, Absence” consiste en cinco piezas de ambient que abre con “Movement”, cuyas frases de piano se deslizan con suavidad, evocando imágenes en las que asoman tímidamente gestos humanos; las manos buscando refugio, abrazándose o bien naturaleza como grandes piedras sobre una playa o el mar. “Space” muestra un diálogo en el piano y el acorde de una guitarra y notas ambientales sintetizadas y una voz elevada.
“Body” es una canción frágil que se desgrana y que parece disolverse como polvo y que aleatoriamente la relaciono con las fotografías de escaleras que insinúan un destino, un lugar de ensueño. Para “Senses” he escogido al azar plantas y los árboles de un bosque desde donde emerge una preciosa voz Rin Howell flota por el aire. En “Presence”, que cierra este álbum, aparece como imagen un grupo de personas de una época pasada sobre la lluvia y que se protegen con sus paraguas. Una presencia marcada por la nostalgia.
The Humble Bee & Offthesky transporta al oyente a un mundo introspectivo y solitario, envuelto en pequeñas melodías.

Jason Corder aka Offthesky is an experimental sound artist from Denver Colorado who works in the ambient subgenre.
He has been active for over 20 years working in the fields of music production, video art, audio software and occasionally interactive sound sculptures. His albums have been released on Home Normal, on 12k’s term sublabel, Facture, IIKKI, among other imprints.
On this album Craig Tattersall is in charge of the spaces, notes and tapes. For his part, Jason Corder in the arrangements, mixing, synthesizers, percussive textures, glockenspiel and vibraphone. As guest artist Rin Howell is on vocals.
Regarding Mikael Siirilä’s artistic proposal he comments: “My small individual photographs examine the themes of absence, presence and outsiderhood… I work solely with black & white film and the darkroom.”
“Here In, Absence” consists of five ambient pieces that opens with “Movement,” whose piano phrases glide smoothly, evoking images in which human gestures timidly appear; hands seeking refuge, hugging each other or nature, such as large stones on the beach and on the sea. “Space” features piano dialogue, a guitar chord. synthesized ambient notes and a soaring voice.
“Body” is a fragile song that falls apart and seems to dissolve like dust that I randomly relate to the photographs of stairs that hint at a destination, a dream place. For “Senses” I have randomly chosen plants and trees from a forest from which Rin Howell’s gorgeous vocals emerge and hover into the space. In “Presence”, which closes the album, a photograph a group of people comes out from a bygone era standing in the rain and protecting themselves with their umbrellas. A presence marked by nostalgia.
The Humble Bee & Offthesky transports the listener to an introspective and lonely world, wrapped in small melodies.
