Adam Wiltzie
El compositor e ingeniero de sonido Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie nació en Nueva York, vivió en Austin, Texas y desde hace algunos años se mudó a la campiña flamenca, al norte de Bruselas. Wiltzie es mejor conocido como co-fundador en 1993 del dúo de música ambiental, Stars Of The Lid, junto a Brian McBride, quien falleció en 2023.
Publicaron siete álbumes en el legendario sello Kranky, más algunos singles que editaron en distintos sellos. Wiltzie, en 2004, lanzó su álbum debut homónimo con su proyecto The Dead Texan, dúo audiovisual formado por el músico Adam Wiltzie y la videoartista griega Christina Vantzou. Adicionalmente, junto al compositor y pianista norteamericano, Dustin O’Halloran, formaron A Winged Victory for the Sullen, con quien debutaron con el álbum homónimo en 2011, también por Kranky. Han lanzado cuatro álbumes de estudio, un EP y un álbum de banda sonora y además les han encargado componer para obras teatrales y danza.
“Eleven Fugues For Sodium Pentothal” fue grabado en el estudio de la casa de Wilzie, con cuerdas agregadas en Budapest en las antiguas instalaciones de la radio nacional húngara (Magyar Radio). Contó también con el diseño sonoro e instrumentación adicionales de Mark Nelson (Pan American, Labradford) y la mezcla de Robert Hampson de Loop.
Este bello álbum que comienza (supongo) con un tributo a Brian McBride con la pieza “Enterrado en Westwood Memorial Park, en una tumba anónima, a la izquierda de Walter Matthau”, despliega un ensamblaje de música clásica moderna y ambient que se caracteriza por sus sesiones de cuerda sobrias y melancólicas, así como las melodías edificantes del single “Tissue Of Lies”. El maravilloso diálogo del contrabajo y los violines de las fugas “Pelagic Swell” y “(Don’t Go Back To) Boogerville” evocan elegíacas imágenes cinematográficas.

Composer and sound engineer Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie was born in New York, lived in Austin, Texas and for some years has moved into the Flemish countryside, North of Brussels. Wiltzie is best known as the 1993 co-founder of the ambient music duo, Stars Of The Lid, alongside Brian McBride, who passed away in 2023.
They released seven albums on the legendary Kranky label, plus some singles released on various imprints. Wiltzie, in 2004, released his self-titled debut album under the alias of The Dead Texan, an audiovisual duo formed by musician Adam Wiltzie and Greek video artist Christina Vantzou. Additionally, together with the American composer and pianist, Dustin O’Halloran, formed A Winged Victory for the Sullen, making a debut with the homonym album in 2011, also by Kranky. They have released four studio albums, an EP and a soundtrack album and have also been commissioned to compose for theater and dance works.
“Eleven Fugues For Sodium Pentothal” was recorded in Wilzie’s home studio, with strings added in Budapest at the former facilities of Hungarian national radio (Magyar Radio). It also featured additional sound design and instrumentation by Mark Nelson (Pan American, Labradford) and mixing by Loop’s member Robert Hampson.
This gorgeous album that begins (I guess) with a tribute to Brian McBride with the piece “Buried At Westwood Memorial Park, In An Unmarked Grave, To The Left Of Walter Matthau,” displays a blend of modern classical and ambient music that is characterized by its spare and melancholic string sessions, as well as the uplifting melodies of the single “Tissue Of Lies”. The wonderful double bass and violins dialogue of the fugues “Pelagic Swell” and “(Don’t Go Back To) Boogerville” evoke elegiac cinematic images.
The unmistakable dreamy atmospheres of Stars Of The Lid, The Dead Texan and A Winged Victory for the Sullen always feel poignant and at the same time hopeful in their beauty and this new solo album by Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie, is definitely not the exception.
