Wolf Eyes | 'No Answers: Lower Floors' | De Stijl | 2013

Wolf Eyes | 'No Answers: Lower Floors' | De Stijl | 2013

The band was formed in the late '90s with Nate Young, Aaron Dilloway and John Olson in Michigan City and since then Wolf Eyes has become a collective mutant ensemble, consisting of musicians, writers, photographers, among other disciplines. The collaborative work between them is constant and their common interest in the post-industrial and noise sound make them create side-projects like Dead Machine (Olson and his wife Tovah), Clay Rendering (Connelly and his wife Tara), Stare Case (Olson and Young), while Dilloway bears his solo projects and collabs with several artists from the noise scene. Over one thousand publications Wolf Eyes has released on his own labels as American Tapes (Olson) Hanson Records (Dilloway) or in other independent imprints such as Hospital Productions, Fusetron, De Stijl, or Ultra Eczema, among others.
Dilloway left the group to live in Nepal in 2005 and was replaced by Mike Connelly who quit to focus on his band, Hair Police and also replaced by  'Crazy' Jim Baljo. Any way, both Connelly and Dilloway contributed to 'No Answers: Lower Floors', their latest album released on De Stijl.
'Choking Flies' displayed a lower deep metal bowl which is the rhythm based combined with the raw guitar of Baljo, vocals and harsh electronics sounds like. What comes to mind when I hear 'Choking Flies' and 'Chattering Lead' is Cabaret Voltaire's 'The Voice Of America' with a similar half-sung vocals and dark synth lines.
'Confession Of The Informer' is an eerie drone and processed voices on tape. 'Warning Sign', the final track, bursts with a steady and creaky post-industrial clang.
Wolf Eyes shows on 'No Answers: Lower Floors' penetrating sounds, visceral and specially wrenching.
